change from nutro to solid gold?
ok so i feed my dog nutro natural choice large breed it comes in a blue bag and it is the chicken kind, but nutro has recently recalled its wet food and although i feed dry this concerns me. i know solid gold is among one of the top brands, and i like how bison is the first ingridient, salmon is the second thats ok too i guess. the only problem i see is that solid gold only has 22 percent protein while nutro has 26. will he lose muscle mass if i make the switch? other brands ive looked at are wellness and canidae or however its spelled but the first ingredient in canidae was chcken MEAL the meal part turns me off give me your thoughts on this please. oh i also looked at innova evo that has 46 grams of protein but i heard too much protein was bad does this sound like a bad choice for my dog. hes a golden retriever who 4 years old today is his birthday actually =).
oh and on another note, how is my dog supposed to get 100 percent protein if the food provides just 22 percent?
I feed mine Merrick’s.. honestly I couldnt tell you what the protein content is. I dont think exact numbers matter unless your dog has a health condition.. some dogs cannot process high amounts of protein.
Merrick’s does not outcross from other sources to make their food.. they manufacture all their ingredients themselves

“Meal” is a good source of proteins, as long as they type of “meal” is listed. I wouldnt use something that says “meat meal” because it doesnt say what kind of meat.
I am providing the link to the dog food project, I reccommend you look it over. Here is what the dog food project says about meal:
Contrary to what many people believe, meat sources in “meal” form (as long as they are from a specified type of animal, such as chicken meal, lamb meal, salmon meal etc.) are not inferior to whole, fresh meats. Meals consist of meat and skin, with or without the bones, but exclusive of feathers/hair, heads, feet, horns, entrails etc. and have the proper calcium/phosphorus ratio required for a balanced diet. They have had most of the moisture removed, but meats in their original, “wet” form still contain up to 75% water. Once the food reaches its final moisture content of about 9-12%, the meat will have shrunk to sometimes as little as 1/4 of the original amount, while the already dehydrated meal form remains the same and you get more concentrated protein per pound of finished product. This means that in the worst case you are left with only 4 ounces of actual meat content per pound of fresh meat included in a dry kibble, many of which contain less than one pound of meat per 2-3 pounds of grain to begin with. Preferably a food contains quality meat meal as well as some fresh meat.
