How can you tell if something is pirated?

I wanted to buy some dvd box sets of old Nickelodeon cartoons. (Like Doug, Ahh! Real Monsters, Rocko’s Modern Life, etc.) I found this website called NickClassics. How do you tell if they are selling bootlegged dvd’s? I don’t want to have any part in that business. The website is:

http://www.nickclassics.com/store/home.php

It’s kind of hard to simply call them bootlegged, because these episodes were publicly available for recording, and these were collected over time. That, to me doesn’t fit the definition of a bootleg, which would just be a direct copy.

This is more of an unlicensed collection. But it’s not “official” if that’s what you mean.

They don’t claim to be official though, the home page clearly states that they had to search an compile the episodes, and remastered them, and produced decent looking packaging. So they are not being deceptive of the nature of these DVDs.
